#WomenWill Launch in Cagayan de Oro

"Instead of Impossible, let all women say I'm
Possible."

That was how I summarized my talk at the launching of Women Will last March 24, 2018 at Limketkai Mall.

#WomenWill is an initiative led by Google Business Group which aims to encourage women to become entrepreneurs and leaders in their careers and communities. In Cagayan de Oro, the chapter is led by Ms. Alma Ebuña.

In many countries around the world, there is still some biases and prejudices against women. That is why, many groups and advocates still continue to fight for equality among genders because up until now, there is still some challenges with regards to gender equality.
I was happy to be part of such worthy cause and share my experience as career woman and a wife/parent at the same time. I was also inspired by the many stories of women-leaders from different walks of life who continue to create a mark in their respective circles and communities.
Nadine Gadia, founder of the Modern Nanays of Mindanao, shared with so much passion about her advocacies in raising healthy children through breastfeeding, cloth diapering, and baby wearing. She greatly emphasized the need to raise children to become healthy to become productive members of the society later on. She also emphasized that women, whether stay-at-home or those with careers, greatly contribute to the country's economy by being the primary caregivers of our future leaders.

Ruby Caberte, blogger, founder of Pinay Mommy Online Community, and a single mom of 3, shared about the challenges and struggles of being an online worker while raising her three kids on her own. Giving up her career to spend more time and be with family was something risky for her and even though she had a falling out with somebody she loved and was depressed at one point in her life, she went back on track and realized that she still have her kids whom she dearly loves. Until now, she continues to inspire women, especially single moms, to stay strong for their loved ones.

Roselle Machate, entrepreneur and woman behind Coffee Works and Vanity Works, also shared about being able to rise from what was considered as failure. For somebody who comes from a family of successful entrepreneurs, she also had a lot of pressure on her as she invested on a business on her own. Though at first, it was smooth-sailing, challenges began to come which made her close a lot of her branches. I can just imagine how it was hard for her especially when she need to close her main and very first branch. But instead of giving up, she took it as an inspiration to focus more on what she has and what was left for her. This includes being able to spend more time with her family and kids (which she hardly did when she had a lot of branches), to eat healthy, and to focus on how she can improve her remaining businesses. According to her, whenever we venture into a business, we need to make sure that it's something that we know and/or is passionate about and that we know/learn how to run it.

Aside from the stories shared by these inspiring women, there was also an activity for the women-participants.

Freebies and snacks were also enjoyed by the participants.

The launching of Women Will is just the beginning of a great collaboration among women leaders, especially in Cagayan de Oro. We are so glad for Ms. Alma Ebuña, Google Business Group lead, for inviting us and making us be part of this very awesome community.

Women can. Women will.

The Kagay-anon: Bb. El Salvador 2013, Ms. Sherra Mae Vacalares

Hi Kagay-anons! Here's an interview with the winner of the recently concluded Bb. El Salvador 2013, Ms. Sherra Mae Vacalares! :)

Sherra Mae Labadan Vacalares
20
Graduating students of BEED-SPED from Mindanao University of Science and Technology

AWARDS: Miss Belo, Best in Talent, Best in Swimsuit, Best in Gown

About me:

I am a bubbly girl and always wanted to have fun in life. Very smiling, energetic, enthusiastic, simple, witty, friendly and confident!
I love to dance together with my friends. I love to sing but unfortunately singing doesn’t love me :D I am an independent, out-going, open-minded and strong lady. I usually turn my difficulties into opportunities to motivate myself.  I also love to get involved in community outreach programs and give service to humanity.
I have the passion in teaching children and enjoy a lot with my students, they are my happiness.

The Kagay-anon:  How is like to be crowned as Bb. Elsalvador 2013?

S    Sherra: Being the first Bb. El Salvador 2013 is a big responsibility for me. It’s because a lot of Tagnipan-ons are expecting much from me. I am quite pressured at the same time because I need to protect this title and maintain its image, name and reputation. I think I do need to prove to all Tagnipan-ons that being crowned as Bb. El Salvador 2013 is not just all about the beauty, elegance and fancy but it is more of a “beauty with the purpose to humanity.

The Kagay-anon:What did you do to prepare for the pageant?

Sherra:  Actually, a month before the pageant I was then only told that I will be the one to represent our Barangay for this prestigious event. I felt nervous that time yet excited for it. Then I started preparing myself by conditioning my mind and thinking about it positively. I also maintained my jogging exercise which I have been doing. I had my healthy diet because my body structure was quite big. In fact, my cousins and friends advised me to slim down because among the candidates in term of vital statistics I was really the biggest. :D

At first, I was really not open to my friends about me joining the pageant but then eventually they have known about it and I was really thankful because they helped and supported me althroughout my journey in becoming the Bb. El Salvador 2013. They gave me words of encouragement, inspired me and motivated me a lot. They also help me out in answering questions that they throw at me to sharpen my critical thinking in the way I answer questions which has a great factor in winning. And luckily I guess that helped me very much.

My family was also very supportive; they were always at my side during my preparations. And during practices, they were the ones who were with me and guided me as well.

The Kagay-anon:  What are your plans after being crowned as Bb. El Salvador 2013?

Sherra:  I always wanted to improve the educational sector of our city and help out our young generations; I guess that would be my advocacy as the Bb. El Salvador 2013.If given the chance I and my court want to do outreach programs together with the Department of Tourism and Department of Education of El Salvador City and contribute further in educating my co Tagnipan-ons.

I am also planning of giving Medical Mission with the help of the City Council of El Salvador City and JCI-Kagahaan Gold #jcikg who is one of the willing partners of this project.

Also, my court wants to initiate tree planting in our city that would greatly help our environment. I guess with these plans, I will be able to create an impact and the best Bb. El Salvador City ever.

The Kagay-anon:  Message to your supporters and friends.

Sherra: First of all, I wanted to thank everybody who supported and trusted me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Let me have this opportunity to Thank my aunt, Melding Bombeo who endorsed and really, really encouraged me to join this pageant.  Thank you so much because if it was not because of you, I wouldn’t have this title today.

Thank you to my very supportive, loving and proud family who from the very start always there for me. Thank you for persuading me in a positive way and always excited and looking forward in bringing home the bacon. I feel so blessed having you, thank you so much!

Thank you to my friends,
JCI-Kagayhaan Gold #jcikg who motivated me a lot and really brought  a tarpaulin with them that showed how supportive they were inspite the busy schedules of my ates and kuyas and inspite the distance of our city. Thank you very much!

Thank you also to all my friends, relatives, and neighbors in Molugan who were also very very compassionate, loyal and were always believing in my ability. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

And most of all, Thank you to the new City Council members and to the organizers of SOAR EL SALVADOR CITY who came up with this prominent event for our city. I know and I believe that in time, we will be really achieving

CDOBloggers 2012 Induction of New Officers

A long journey will always begin with a single step.

True enough. This year, I am going to have a long journey with the CDOBloggers. The first step? The activity yesterday.

Yesterday, we had our first monthly meet-up/get-together for this year and it was also the induction of the new set of officers. Guess what? They made me the Vice-President (External) for the group! And until now, yes, I am still overwhelmed by the opportunity.

Anyway, so this is what happened yesterday. We started off with the "getting-to-know-you" activity and the videoke session.

Then, a mini-program was conducted. The new President gave his talk about the CDOBloggers. (We were so serious listening to his 'speech'. hehe)

The induction, oath-taking, and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement came after.

...and then the 'physical', 'nerve-wracking' game which made us laugh so loud. Thanks Vic for this game! hehehe.

...and who would forget the camera whoring session???!!!

Looking forward to a meaningful and fruitful year ahead with these blogging peeps. It will definitely be a busy year for me!

See you all in the next monthly meet-up!!! We hope to meet more bloggers of CDO! :)

Cheers CDOBloggers 2012!

The Versatile Blogger Award

Hello everyone! How are you? I'm sorry I haven't posted anything in the past few weeks. As you all know, Cagayan de Oro City was greatly affected by the typhoon Sendong last month and we became so very busy of trying to help in the relief operations. Until now, we continually work to help our brothers and sisters here. If you wish to help out, you may refer to this post.

On the other hand, I got a good news from one of my blogging friends when I woke up today. She gave me the VERSATILE BLOGGER AWARD. This award has been going around the blogging community for awhile and I would like to thank The Ilongga for giving me such recognition and to all my readers who have been visiting my blog. :) I'm not really sure why I'm considered as such but probably because I can post just about anything under the sun. Versatility, that is.

Part of the rules is to give 7 random pieces about myself and here it goes:

#1 - I'm a sucker for fiber. I love eating and drinking anything that has fiber. :)

#2 - I've never been late to school. Yes. I'd rather be absent than get tardy.

#3 - I get dysmenorrhea monthly. I envy women who do not experience this.

#4 - I bellydance. I love what it did to my body. I got slimmer because of it.

#5 - I am a Math Teacher. I still wonder how it all happened. Hahahaha.

#6 - I love traveling. I spend most of my earnings going out and about. It's an expensive investment though.

#7 - I'm very organized but not when it comes to the contents of my bag.  yeah.

Now, it's my time to give the recognition to others as well. But before that, let me give you the mechanics first. So, here's the mechanics for the VERSATILE BLOGGING AWARD:
1. In a post on your, blog, nominate 15 fellow bloggers for The Versatile Blogger Award.

2. In the same post, add the Versatile Blogger Award.

3. In the same post, thank the blogger who nominated you in a post with a link back to their blog.

4. In the same post, share 7 completely random pieces of information about yourself.

5. In the same post, include this set of rules.

6. Inform each nominated blogger of their nomination by posting a comment on each of their blogs.

*******Drum rolls********

Say hurray to my 15 Versatile bloggers! Do check out their blogs! (In no particular order)

Shared Vision: The DNA of Leadership

The 2nd Leadership Conference with the theme "Shared Vision: The DNA of Leadership" was successful. With high school students from the different schools in the city as participants, I am so blessed and very thankful for the opportunity of being able to share my insights and experiences in terms of leadership. I hope that I was able to inspire and motivate, in one way or another, these student-leaders to find means and ways to unleash their potentials as leaders.

I really like the theme of this year's conference because it talks a lot about cooperation and mutual understanding which is very important in groups or organizations. The basic idea is that a group should have one objective and aim to be able to work together in unity for them to reach the goal.

So, I went there and I was excited to share and deepen the topic. Because I was tasked to provide a "seminar-workshop", I had to think of an activity that would eventually lead to the discussion of the theme. Fortunately, from my leadership workshops before, I was able to provide an activity that made the students realize the importance of having a shared vision.

Let me show you the photos from the event.

That's me preparing for my visual presentation while I was being introduced.

I had to give instructions for the activity first.

The groups were given materials right away to fulfill their objective.

And I would have to observe the process because it has to deepened in the discussion later on.

The groups presented their outputs after 20 minutes.

I also asked some of the participants to answer deepening questions about the activity they did.

Oh... and this is the discussion part.

These are the participative student-leaders.

And these are the supportive organizers which helped me a lot with my talk. :)

Thank you again and again for this wonderful opportunity! I'm hoping to do this next time! <3

Interview with the Quantum Photoshop Competition 2011 winners

Quantum is a tradition of Xavier Computer Enthusiasts’ League (XCEL) of Xavier University since 1994. It is pure competition participated by different schools in Mindanao. Its objectives are to test the level of knowledge and literacy of high school students in Computer and Information Technology and develop a science and technology culture among the youth.

With this year’s theme: “Maximizing the Potential of Information Technology for Economic Development”, QITC aims to offer information on how to dramatically improve the productivity and quality of Information Technology economically. It’s about leveraging lessons from splendid keynotes speeches from experts that provide discussion about the best practices applied today in the economy through Information Technology.

One of the events of this year’s QITC (Quantum and Information Technology Convention) was the Photoshop competition participated by high school students from the different schools in the city.

It was held last February 5, 2011 (SAT) 11:00am - 4:00pm at Lab C, 3rd floor CIT building, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan and the Awarding and Closing Ceremonies was held on the 5th of February 4:00pm at the Atrium, Ground Floor, SM City Cagayan de Oro after the Quiz Show. The participants were asked to create a poster relevant to the theme.
Corpus Christi High School emerged as the champion, while Lapasan National High School and the Regional Science Highschool bagged the 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

The Kagay-anon had the opportunity to interview two of the winners of the said competition. Let us read how Priyanka Jainani of Corpus Christi and Michelle Bacabac of the Regional Science High School made their way to the top.

The Kagay-anon: What was the competition all about?

Mich: It was all about designing a poster in which the medium is the computer. You make digital art using the software Adobe Photoshop.

Yanka: We were tasked to make a poster that would reflect the contest's theme, "Maximizing the Potentials of Information Technology for Economic Development" using Adobe Photoshop CS3. We were to create the images on our own (using only the mouse, no digital tablets were allowed) and we were not allowed to import anything from the internet or any other external source. The time allotted was 3 hours and although it may seem like a long time, 180 minutes whizzed by in no time!

The Kagay-anon: How did you join the competition?

Mich: I joined by registering in qitc's website. Well, my coach registered me. Our school was informed through an invitation letter.

Yanka: I was informed by my Computer teacher four days prior to the competition.

The Kagay-anon: What were your preparations for the competition?

Mich: I already know how to use Photoshop so I didn't really have to study and learn the basics. I actually searched for tutorials on the internet to learn new techniques in designing. And I always browse images on the internet for inspiration.

Yanka: I practiced every day for four days for at least 5 hours, which was spent brain storming and organizing. I only trained at school and didn't really practice at home. I was consistently pulled out of prom practice in order for me to train, which was a good thing and a bad thing at the same time!
The winning entry by Yanka

The Kagay-anon: What happened during the competition?

Mich: We were given the mechanics and criteria before the start of the competition. We had 3 hours to make the poster and we were also in the same room with the Paint participants. Everything was smooth and the computers were working very well.

Yanka: Since the competition day fell on the day after prom, I was really groggy that morning. Sometime during the competition proper, I excused myself and went to the comfort room and felt like dozing off! For my final work, I made a similar poster to the one I made as a trial during my training sessions, but I would honestly say that it was more detailed and more well thought of compared to the practice sketch. About 116 layers later, when I finally passed my work and got a glimpse of my seatmates' creations, I felt really insecure! Since this was my first shot at joining a contest that was Photoshop-related, plus the fact that I only self-taught myself on Photoshop and didn't really have any formal art education, I couldn't help but feel so unexperienced.

The Kagay-anon: What did you feel about winning?

Mich: I was really excited about winning the competition because we have cash prize. Haha

Yanka: I didn't believe it! When they showed everyone's work on the projector screen while awarding the certificates of participation, I couldn't stop myself from being so discouraged! They were all so amazing! I wasn't even called up on stage to get a certificate of participation (I was told afterwards that they couldn't read my name properly, something like that,) and I already felt that my creation was so out of place amongst all the amazing artworks of the other participants. After they called out the award for third place, I practically stopped listening to the announcement, but when the award for the champion was called out and my school was mentioned, I couldn't help but smile in happiness!

3rd place entry by Mich

The Kagay-anon: What advise can you give to all those who want to join contests like this?

Mich: Keep on practicing Adobe Photoshop. It's a really great software wherein you can express yourself through art. Enjoy and love what you do.

Yanka: Sleep well before the competition and organize your thoughts even before the contest day. Brainstorming on the day itself would be too time consuming. Believe in your capabilities and the quality of your work! Beam that you'd top everyone else -- it wouldn't hurt to be optimistic! And of course, before you even draw that first shape or create that first layer, pray. It works.
